A secure ride – for now

- Citizen reporter

A shaken Uber driver pitches up at my gate for a trip to Eastgate. He gets out of his smart Corolla and shows me dents on the side where he was pelted with stones. “Who did it?” “Metered taxi drivers,” he says without a doubt. They not only broke his cellphone, but also chased him in an Audi.

He skipped three red traffic lights to escape.

He claims the double licence discs – the usual one and another for public liability – gave him away.

We drive to the shopping centre, both jittery, and he refuses to drop me at “the hot spot”, as he calls it. “I’d rather cancel the trip,” he says.

Will I use Uber again? I will. It’s good. But will I, as a passenger, eventually pay the price, too, I wonder? –
