Months to trial for ac­cused in lover’s death

Mur­der-ac­cused Sandile Mantsoe who al­legedly killed and set alight Karabo Mokoena, who had been his girl­friend for seven months, will spend an­other six months be­hind bars be­fore his case goes to trial.

Mantsoe, 27, has been in cus­tody for about four months af­ter he al­legedly mur­dered Mokoena and buried her in a shal­low grave in Bram­ley in Jo­han­nes­burg ear­lier this year.

The state and the de­fence in­formed the High Court in Jo­han­nes­burg yes­ter­day they were ready to be­gin the trial on March 5, 2018.

Dur­ing bail ap­pli­ca­tion pro­ceed­ings, the in­ves­ti­gat­ing of­fi­cer said via an af­fi­davit that Mantsoe, pic­tured, had made an ad­mis­sion be­fore a com­mis­sioner of oaths that he had poured swim­ming pool acid over Mokoena’s body and set her alight. Mantsoe al­legedly said he had burnt Mokoena so he would not be linked to her mur­der. He al­legedly also said she had in­tro­duced him to tra­di­tional rit­u­als.

The in­ves­ti­gat­ing of­fi­cer added that Mantsoe had said that he and Mokoena had cuts on their bod­ies and match­ing tat­toos in the shape of a cross to en­sure a last­ing bond be­tween them and the suc­cess of his busi­ness.

Ac­cord­ing to the af­fi­davit, Mantsoe also al­legedly said the rea­son his busi­ness did not do well was be­cause of a jinx af­ter he broke up with Mokoena, and the only way he could break it was to kill her. – ANA
