Storm damage assessors fan out
The Santam Group has dispatched special claims teams to areas affected by this week’s catastrophic weather conditions across large swathes of the country.
A severe storm and flash floods battered public buildings, commercial properties, housing infrastructure, roads and bridges and water and electricity infrastruc- ture in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga on Monday and Tuesday, leaving 11 people dead.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu said the estimated costs of repairing the province’s 133 damaged schools was R136.5 million.
Santam’s executive head of claims, Ebrahim Asmal, said: “We will be in a better position to provide a view on the impact of these extreme weather conditions in the next 48 hours.”
Mchunu has declared KwaZulu-Natal a disaster area while Gauteng Premier David Makhura also declared parts of Gauteng disaster areas. – ANA
