Kirk­land opens heart to me­dia

– For­mer Liver­pool and Eng­land goal­keeper Chris Kirk­land has re­vealed de­pres­sion was be­hind his de­ci­sion to re­tire from the game last year.

The 36-year-old left Bury shortly af­ter join­ing the English third-tier club, hav­ing pre­vi­ously played for teams in­clud­ing Liver­pool, Wi­gan Ath­letic and Sh­effield Wed­nes­day.

Capped once by Eng­land, Kirk­land said he had thought about com­mit­ting sui­cide, but thoughts of his wife and daugh­ter kept him go­ing.

“I was wor­ried how close I was to the next step. That’s why I said I needed to stop play­ing,” Kirk­land said in an in­ter­view with The Guardian yes­ter­day. – AFP
