‘Masterchef’ Pather back on screens with food, travel show

- Shenaaz Jamal

MASTERCHEF winner Kamini Pather will be back on television screens next week with her new reality travel, food and lifestyle show, Girl Eat World .

The Johannesburgbased food writer, who wowed South Africans as a contestant on Masterchef South Africa in its second season, is back to take food lovers on a journey to 10 different cities around the world.

Girl Eat World will premier on the Food Network channel (175) next week.

In it, food lover and blogger Pather travels around the world bringing to life the stories behind foods in the different destinations.

In the pilot episode she takes on the streets of Tokyo and goes from eating sushi at a subway to catching her own fish for lunch. The scenery moves from the buzzing streets of Tokyo to the rooftop gardens overlooking the city of the future.

In the 10-part series Pather will meet the cities’ bloggers, who show her more than the average tourist eateries. “This is a food and travel show that will make couch cooks either want to book their next flight to one of these destinations or look in their fridge,” she said.

While Pather’s life might look glamorous, shooting the series in 10 different countries was sometimes less so – sometimes involving sleeping at airports, and also gaining weight from eating without exercising.

She also confessed to not fancying everything she ate, including a Thai delicacy, Balat – fertilised duck egg – in Sydney.

“I cracked open this boiled egg and the juice came out as I tasted it and I was told I had just eaten the placenta. I couldn’t carry on. It was unusual.”
