Runaway 50km win for Magson

DEVERA Magson proved that she is unbeatable over the distance when she won the Bruintjies­hoogte 50km race on Saturday.

After successful­ly defending her mall:e Bay 50km Ultra Marathon title last month, the Nedbank AC athlete, who is hoping for a top 10 finish in this year’s Comrades, finished in 4:11:11, beating second-placed Terray Newcombe by a massive 23 minutes.

The overall men’s winner was Charlo AC runner Charles Segalo, who finished in 3:12:49, with Mzwanele Maphekula (Bluewater Bay) second.

Basil McClean and Wimpie Herbt were awarded their permanent numbers, while Basie Boneparte received his permanent number in the 25km race.

NEARLY 500 participan­ts turned up for the inaugural Sardinia Bay parkrun on Saturday.

Comrades legend Bruce Fordyce, who introduced the run to the country, was in the city to launch the run on Friday and was one of the 498 in the starting lineup. This was Fordyce’s 255th run.

The man behind park runs in the Eastern Cape, Bob Norris of East London, also took part, completing his 207th run.

The Sardinia Bay parkrun is the third in the city after Hobie Beach and Lady Slipper.

Plans are already under way to start parkruns in Uitenhage and Jeffreys Bay.
