Fillies set to show their style

- Punters’ Pal

IT IS time for the babies to be in the spotlight at the Fairview race track.

The feature race at today’s meeting is the East Cape Fillies Nursery for two-year-old fillies. They will be taking each other on over 1 200m.

This is always an exciting race, for various reasons. The young ones are mostly an unknown factor and can suddenly improve to make the frame.

Hopefully we can see a few future stars coming to the fore in this race.

It will not be easy for punters to pick the right ones, although there are a few that have already shown that they can run.

In the past some very useful Cape Town raiders have won this one. It is interesting that top trainer Justin Snaith has an unraced runner – Better Together – in the race.

The other Cape Town visitor is Nanna Anna, trained by Paul Reeves, which won in Cape Town in her third start. She should be a big runner.

The local stables do not have to stand back, with Via Seattle, Pure Fiction (both Yvette Bremner) and Hot N Hazy (Alan Greeff) already boasting some fine victories.

Jet Explorer (race 4) looks like the banker of the day on a difficult card.

He will be very hard to beat in a Pinnacle Stakes with Gavin Lerena in the saddle.

Punters can look forward to a busy day tomorrow with two Gr2 races topping the bill at Turffontein in Johannesburg.

There is also the R125-million Dubai World Cup meeting on the Meydan track where South African trainer Mike de Kock will saddle Mubtaahij.

De Kock has the difficult customer Fawree in the Derby, with South African jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe in the saddle.

On Monday, we are back at Fairview for the first leg of the East Cape Poly Challenge. This Challenge was a huge success and crowd-puller last year.

Hopefully a horse will grab the imagination like Go get the sheriff did last season and have a decent crack at winning all three legs of the Challenge.

Do not forget that the Guineas will be run at Fairview next Friday to end off a great month’s racing in the Friendly City.
