Tavern owner faces charge of murder

A PORT Elizabeth tavern owner is facing charges of murder and attempted murder after an altercatio­n at his establishm­ent in Korsten shortly after midnight on Saturday.

One male nursing student based at Livingston­e Hospital was killed and two others wounded during the altercatio­n.

Provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the two wounded men had been treated and discharged.

Police spokeswoma­n Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said: “According to witnesses, the deceased was arguing with someone when the owner intervened and asked them to leave.

“An altercatio­n ensued involving the tavern owner.

"It is believed the tavern owner, 61, fired two shots. A 28-year-old man was killed at the scene."
