1910: Louis Botha be­comes the first prime min­is­ter of the Union of South Africa af­ter his South African Party wins the elec­tion for the House of Assem­bly.

1914: Boer leader Gen­eral Koos de la Rey is shot dead by a ric­o­chet­ing bullet when his chauf­feur fails to stop at a po­lice road­block near Langlaagte, Jo­han­nes­burg, set up to catch the crim­i­nal Fos­ter gang.

1984: Labour Party leader Al­lan Hen­drickse and Na­tional Peo­ple’s Party leader Amic­hand Ra­jbansi, pic­tured, are ap­pointed to the cabi­net as chair­men of the min­is­ters’ coun­cils of the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tive and House of Del­e­gates re­spec­tively un­der the tri­cam­eral par­lia­ment.
