Old campaigners add sentimental support for race

The Herald (South Africa) - - SPORT - Punters’ Pal

IT must be the mark of a champion when you can relax in the Kruger National Park and your stable still produces three winners on the track in Port Elizabeth.

This was the case on Friday last week at the Fairview Polytrack when East Cape champion trainer Alan Greeff had three winners.

It showed that Greeff’s stable is a well-oiled machine and it will be very difficult to keep him away from yet another trainers’ title this season.

Like all racehorse trainers, Greeff will only take a short break and I expect he will be in the room of the Racing Association at Fairview today to shout home his winners in characteristic fashion.

Greeff does have a very strong hand and the fiveyear-old gelding Vous Et Var will have many supporters in the sprint race.

In his last outing, Vous Et Var and his jockey Greg Cheyne did not get their timing right and were too late on the scene to win the Speeders Stakes. They could put the record straight this time.

Vous Et Var will be a popular banker bet but there are dangers, with Villa Del Largo, Zevenastic and Miracle Bureau among those ready for a big run.

Villa Del Largo is one of three seasoned campaigners in the race that will have a lot of sentimental support.

Former horse of the year Sir Duke will be a huge factor if he is at his best and it is good to see crowd favourite Gogetthesheriff returning to the track.

Gogetthesheriff has only had two runs this year and the focus will be on how he gets out of the gates as this has been a huge problem with the Jacques Strydomtrained star.

Let’s hold thumbs that the Sheriff does get away on terms and that we can soon see the best of him again.

Talking about Gogetthesheriff reminded me of a great time the media had with the Strydom stable and some of his runners at Maitland Beach.

The Cape Town racing media were over the moon about an unexpected invite from trainer Glen Kotzen to an early morning gallop of his horses – but the Port Elizabeth trainers had already shown the way in this regard many moons ago.
