Beach drinking area a bad idea

The Herald (South Africa) - - YOUR VIEWS -

I AM responding to the disturbing article published a few days ago suggesting that having a boozing area at the beach was being considered (“Plan for beach boozing spots”, October 13).

Who thought this was a good idea?

Reasons that it’s a bad idea:

Noise pollution – yes, it is a real thing, and I’m thinking of both human and wildlife that will be disturbed by noise such as loud music, shouting as well as street racing;

Drinking in public is illegal, as far as I know, therefore enough said!

The litter will be made so much worse!

Port Elizabeth and other cities have a litter issue and municipal workers do not always do a fantastic job.

The broken glass alone is a major health hazard to both humans and animals!

Coastal protection – am I not correct in stating that our entire coastline is protected under national and regional law?

Since when is it OK to disturb protected fauna and flora?

Death – the poor life guards are going to be blamed if anyone dies!

Alcohol and swimming are never a good idea even for trained swimmers.

These drunk persons do and will ruin the space for the locals and tourists!

Please tell me I am not the only one who feels this way.

This is one of the worst ideas I have ever seen!

Courtney, Port Elizabeth
