1878: De Afrikaner Bond po­lit­i­cal party is es­tab­lished in the Cape. 1910: The first South African Union par­lia­ment opens. 1976: Rhode­sian com­man­dos carry out a “hot pur­suit” mis­sion in­side Mozam­bique af­ter the mur­der of four white civil­ians by gueril­las. 1996: Fol­low­ing the re­fusal by the ANC to seek amnesty for its past hu­man rights abuses, TRC chair­man Arch­bishop Des­mond Tutu threat­ens to re­sign. 2006: For­mer prime min­is­ter and state pres­i­dent PW Botha, pic­tured, dies at the age of 90 at his house near Wilder­ness. He had suf­fered a stroke in 1989.
