1878: De Afrikaner Bond political party is established in the Cape. 1910: The first South African Union parliament opens. 1976: Rhodesian commandos carry out a “hot pursuit” mission inside Mozambique after the murder of four white civilians by guerillas. 1996: Following the refusal by the ANC to seek amnesty for its past human rights abuses, TRC chairman Archbishop Desmond Tutu threatens to resign. 2006: Former prime minister and state president PW Botha, pictured, dies at the age of 90 at his house near Wilderness. He had suffered a stroke in 1989.
