Petrol price hike ‘legal theft’

The Independent on Saturday - - OPINION - From: RESHMA HARINARAIN

REGARDING the latest petrol price increase, by a massive 67c a litre, it is time citizens said enough is enough! The increase can only be described as legal theft.

For the past eight years or so there has been a dramatic fall in the price of Brent crude oil – from a high of $125 to below $50 a barrel. In fact, South Africans should be paying about R6 a litre for petrol. Although the price of crude oil has dropped almost 70%, motorists are paying more for petrol. High fuel prices have an adverse effect on the country’s population, especially the poor, with rising food prices and travelling costs.

Where the massive savings from the low Brent crude prices are going is anyone’s guess.
