Beer fans to raise bar at the Bierfest
IF YOU thought the only training involved in preparing for the annual TOPS at SPAR Bierfest, presented by The Independent on Saturday, was a good bar workout, then think again.
The staff working at the event are more than just beer-fit and would put most festival fans to shame with their prowess.
For example, at last year’s TOPS at SPAR Bierfest, the fräuleins and beerboys walked (or more likely ran) a combined total of just over 18500km to unite thirsty Bierfestarians with their beers.
That’s roughly the same distance as walking from Cape Town to London and back!
If you consider that a full stein of beer weighs about 2.2kg, you’ll appreciate the mug muscle needed to keep the beer flowing.
Bierfest staff build their biceps at the gym and last year spent 20560 hours lifting weights so they could lift those beers.
It’s all rather thirsty work, but you will never see the TOPS at SPAR Bierfest fräuleins and beerboys even being tempted to crack open a cold one – oh no!
Their training, which clocks in at 5 140 collective hours, includes practising the art of resistance.
And so it is with German precision that they are able to resist the festival’s beautiful brews, serving them to grateful Bierfestarians instead.
If you think that’s all rather impressive, take a look at these other fascinating facts and stats from the 2016 TOPS at SPAR Bierfest.
A total of 1 755 staff worked at the event across the different venues. Of these, 1 028 donned dirndls and lederhosen to serve the beers.
The women took the lead with a staff complement of 771 who, between them, wore 12 336 plaits in their hair and used 771 tubes of red lipstick over the duration of the four festivals, all in the name of that fashionable fräulein look.
Together they served 37 382 litres of beer and a mammoth 74 664 litres of draught, a total of 112 046 litres!
Naturally Jägermeister was also a big hit, with 14 893 shots being enjoyed during all the festivals.
The TOPS at SPAR Bierfest is no mean feat to organise, and more than 6 400 hours were spent planning last year’s festival, which used 30 tons of production equipment which was transported via two enormous Superlink trucks. – Staff Reporter
