Krejcir trial date set, but further delay feared

- Shain Germaner

A TRIAL date has been set for the murder case of Radovan Krejcir and his four co-accused, but this could ultimately be delayed again. This is after one of the defence lawyers indicated she wished to bring a “substantive” pre-trial application.

Krejcir, Siboniso Miya, Nkanyiso Mafunda, Siphiwe Memela and Borislavov Grigorov are currently on trial for the 2013 murder of Sam Issa, an alleged Bedfordview drug kingpin shot in his car in that suburb.

However, the start of the trial at the high court in Johannesburg has been delayed since April due to numerous issues, from changing legal representation of the accused to delays in disclosure of evidence.

After five months of back and forth, yesterday most of the five defence lawyers said they had finally received all of the State’s evidence against their clients, and a trial date of October 11 was set by the court.

However, Miya’s lawyer, advocate Annelene van den Heever, said she still needed time to peruse the last piece of evidence disclosed to her on Wednesday.

She said she was otherwise satisfied with the State’s disclosure.

However, even though the trial date was set for October 11, Van den Heever told the court that there was an application the defence might still have to bring.

If the application is a substantive one, this could see the trial delayed yet again.

A provisional date to hear the potential application and to assure that each counsel was prepared was then also set down for October 5.
