Cops swoop on KZN’s most wanted

FIVE of KwaZulu-Natal’s most wanted crim­i­nals have been ar­rested.

Of­fi­cers swooped on the men – aged be­tween 22 and 29 – near Dundee on Sun­day, and yes­ter­day.

Act­ing pro­vin­cial po­lice com­mis­sioner Ma­jor-Gen­eral Bheki Langa said in a state­ment that the men were linked to a num­ber of mur­ders, armed rob­beries, hi­jack­ings and rapes.

“Th­ese dan­ger­ous crim­i­nals were cornered while cel­e­brat­ing in the Help­mekaar area,” Langa said. “We will also es­tab­lish from our in­ves­ti­ga­tions if they are wanted for other crimes in the province.”

Po­lice spokesper­son Cap­tain Nqo­bile Gwala said the men were ar­rested af­ter of­fi­cers from King Cetshwayo’s Crime In­tel­li­gence unit, as­sisted by the Dur­ban Spe­cial Task Force, con­ducted an in­tel­li­gence-driven op­er­a­tion.

“They were act­ing on ver­i­fied in­tel­li­gence with re­gards to sus­pects wanted for se­ri­ous crimes in the province,” she said.

She added that the men were found in pos­ses­sion of two un­li­censed firearms and am­mu­ni­tion.

“Po­lice also seized a ve­hi­cle sus­pected to be stolen,” Gwala said.

The men have ini­tially been charged with pos­ses­sion of un­li­censed firearms and am­mu­ni­tion, as well as pos­ses­sion of prop­erty sus­pected to be stolen.

Gwala said they would also be charged in con­nec­tion with cases in KwaMbonambi, Em­pan­geni, Ntam­banana and Madadeni. – Mer­cury Re­porter
