3 held in pos­ses­sion of plat­inum get bail

THREE men found in pos­ses­sion of un­pro­cessed plat­inum were re­leased on R2 000 bail each af­ter they ap­peared in the Tl­ha­bane Mag­is­trate’s Court on Mon­day.

The trio, Wit­ness Madonwa, 23, Muduneni Muqa­ban­iso, 34 and Bot­sh­elo Sekalala, 28, were ar­rested and charged for pos­ses­sion of un­wrought pre­cious met­als.

The sus­pects were nabbed in Pho­keng near Rusten­burg dur­ing a dis­rup­tive op­er­a­tion led by the North West Hawks as­sisted by police’s K9 unit.

The Hawks head, Maj- Gen Linda Mbana said: “In­for­ma­tion was re­ceived from the com­mu­nity al­leg­ing the il­le­gal deal­ing of plat­inum by cer­tain in­di­vid­u­als at Tsits­ing.

Upon ar­rival at the ad­dress of one of the sus­pects, 18 bags of plat­inum and four gas bot­tles were dis­cov­ered in a shack at the back of the house. The re­cov­ered plat­inum weighed about 120kg with a value of about R90 000,” she said.

The men were then ar­rested and fur­ther in­ves­ti­ga­tions into their op­er­a­tions are on­go­ing.

Mbana thanked the com­mu­nity for com­ing for­ward with in­for­ma­tion and fur­ther ap­plauded the in­ves­ti­ga­tion team for act­ing promptly on that in­for­ma­tion.

“We ap­plaud the com­mu­nity for re­port­ing sus­pected il­le­gal ac­tiv­i­ties,” Mbana said. The three men will be back in court on June 22.
