3 held in possession of platinum get bail
THREE men found in possession of unprocessed platinum were released on R2 000 bail each after they appeared in the Tlhabane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The trio, Witness Madonwa, 23, Muduneni Muqabaniso, 34 and Botshelo Sekalala, 28, were arrested and charged for possession of unwrought precious metals.
The suspects were nabbed in Phokeng near Rustenburg during a disruptive operation led by the North West Hawks assisted by police’s K9 unit.
The Hawks head, Maj- Gen Linda Mbana said: “Information was received from the community alleging the illegal dealing of platinum by certain individuals at Tsitsing.
Upon arrival at the address of one of the suspects, 18 bags of platinum and four gas bottles were discovered in a shack at the back of the house. The recovered platinum weighed about 120kg with a value of about R90 000,” she said.
The men were then arrested and further investigations into their operations are ongoing.
Mbana thanked the community for coming forward with information and further applauded the investigation team for acting promptly on that information.
“We applaud the community for reporting suspected illegal activities,” Mbana said. The three men will be back in court on June 22.
