HUNDREDS of community leaders who have been elected as ward committee members will this morning be inducted in an elaborate oath taking ceremony that will also be part of an imbizo.

The induction will be conducted by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Des van Rooyen along with MEC Sisi Ntombela and premier Ace Magashule.

It will be held at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein from 10am.

In a statement, Ntombela said the ceremony was about the Municipal Structures Act which makes is mandatory for all local municipalities to establish ward committees.

“To this effect since the August 2016 local government elections, most municipalities in the province have established their ward committees. The objective of ward committees is to enhance participatory democracy in local government and to make recommendations on any matter affecting wards to ward councillors or through ward councillors to the speakers,” Ntombela said.

She said ward committees were also supported in developing ward operational plans.

“The plans are to ensure the provision of an enabling environment for participation in the planning, implementation and monitoring of service delivery.”
