THE city of Johannesburg in National Pharmacy Awareness Month wants to ensures that all children keep to their immunisation schedules – in line with the expanded programme on immunisation.

“For the first time the annual pharmacy health promotion was allocated the entire month of September.

“It used to be a campaign held over a week to promote and celebrate healthcare services rendered by all healthcare professionals,” the deputy director for pharmacy in the city of Johannesburg’s health department, Sipho Tsamaesi, said.

Pharmacy Awareness Month is supported by the National Department of Health, the South African Pharmacy Council and Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa.

The theme this year is Don’t wait, Vaccinate – pharmacists will be urged to educate communities of the importance of vaccination.

With vaccination, individuals develop immunity to certain diseases that protect them, their families and thier communities.

“We will be visiting patients at old age homes and retirement villages to assist them with proper use of their chronic illness medications,” Tsamaesi said.

“Our health promoters will give short talks at clinics, ensuring that the important message around immunisation is shared with the entire community.
