After Chiefs contractual struggle full back now rendered surplus at Wits

SIBONISO Pa Gaxa may not be doing (media) interviews any more, but the former Bidvest Wits defender will have to field a question or two from any football coach who may be interested in his services. Gaxa, who joined Wits amid squabbles with Kaizer Chiefs over contractual issues, is once again without a club as the Absa Premiership champions have decided against exercising an option on his one-year deal.

Wits are playing Reeve Frosler and Nazeer Allie at right back, automatically rendering the former Bafana Bafana full back as surplus.

And the fact that the welltravelled player, who has also represented SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns, featured just six times last season as the Clever Boys went on to win the league, tells a story that his time may be up sooner than expected in Braamfontein.

But when coach Gavin Hunt decided to take him to Cape Town for the team’s pre-camp in Cape Town, suggestions started pointing at the 33 year old staying put at Wits.

Still without a team and training on his own, Gaxa refused to shed any light on where he could be going next. “Hello, who is this? Oh, from the newspaper? No, I do not do interviews. Yes, I don’t speak to the media,” Gaxa said before putting the phone down. His agent Glyn Binkin did confirm the secret everyone knows, that the defender was not registered with any team in the PSL for the current season and is still trying to find a new home.

“He’s not registered with Wits because we did not sign a contract.

We are looking at other clubs as an option,” Binkin said.

With a number of players choosing to head back to their home provinces when their time in Gauteng seems to be up, Gaxa might also look at trying his luck at AmaZulu, Maritzburg United or Golden Arrows, as the player still believes he has a year or two left to give to the PSL.

The defender is not the only high-profile player struggling to land a club, as former Polokwane City and Orlando Pirates winger Tlou Segolela is finding it hard to get back on the pitch.

Segolela was last on the books of Rise and Shine, but coach Bernard Molwekwa opted against extending the player’s short-term contract when it came to an end last season.

Segolela, 29, is still trying to find a new club, with his biggest hope coming in January’s transfer window.

PICTURE: GALLO IMAGES
