Neighbour murder case postponed
THE case of a 23-year-old man from Bloemanda near Bloemfontein who allegedly burnt his neighbour has been postponed to next week Monday.
Katlego Selokoane briefly appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday before his case was postponed for a formal bail application.
Provincial police spokesperson Col Thandi Mbambo said Selokoane was arrested for the mur- der of his 42-year-old neighbour whose burnt body was found in a dam.
She said the body that was found on Friday after the suspect led the police to where he had dumped the badly burnt body.
“He was arrested on Friday at his hiding place in Phase 9 before leading the police to where he had dumped the body.
“At the stage we cannot reveal the name of the deceased until DNA tests have confirmed it’s her since the body was badly burnt,” Mbambo said.
She said the deceased was last seen last week on Monday night after she went to confront the man about a tree that was hanging over her Bloemanda yard. “She told her children where she was going and when she didn’t return, her daughter, 13, asked the neighbour where she was.
“He confirmed that she had been there but said he had accompanied her back home. The matter was reported to the police and a missing person’s docket was opened,” Mbambo said.
She said upon investigation of the neighbour’s yard, traces of blood and possible human flesh were found, as well as a burnt mattress and samples that were referred to the lab for forensic tests.
“At that time the neighbour was nowhere to be found and attempts to trace him proved fruitless until Friday when he was traced to his hideout in Phase 9,” Mbambo said.
A neighbour who wanted to remain anonymous said he saw the suspect burning a mattress outside the house but the smell was bad.
“I asked him what he was burning that smells so badly and he told me to mind my own business,” the neighbour said.
Selokoane is facing a murder charge.
