Department hosts industrial revolution conference
THE Gauteng department of roads and transport, together with the Transport Forum and Intelligent Transport Solutions, will host the fourth Industrial Revolution and Mobility Conference in Midrand tomorrow.
Department spokesperson Melitah Madiba said the conference would explore ways in which the provincial government could best integrate the industrial revolution’s smart technologies to plan and deliver services.
“It will further discuss ways the provincial government and private sector can jointly define, expand and make popular the debate on the industrial revolution, for the greater good of society, province and the country,” Madiba said.
Transport MEC Ismail Vadi said: “Unless we integrate industrial revolution technologies as part of the way we run our businesses and take a lead in its development, we will be lagging behind global best practices. We also run the risk of being mere consumers of technologies rather than developers and innovators.”
The department said it would also be launching a mobile app for all public transport modes.
Madiba said the application was aimed at providing commuters with real time, accurate public transit information, timetables and fares for Gauteng based public transit operators.
“These include Gautrain, A re Yeng, Rea Vaya, Metrorail, Gautrain bus services, Johannesburg City Sightseeing, minibus taxis, long distance buses and the Tshwane Bus Services,” Madiba said.
Vadi said the application would also allow users to plan their journeys with the option of selecting desired transport modes, travel times and criteria specific to travel modes. In other words shortest versus cheapest trip.
“We are already seeing the power of technology that every day is reshaping public transport services, marketing and consumption. The global technological changes we are witnessing are sparking a revolution in the transport sector,” Vadi said.
He said the department would therefore use innovation, research and development emanating from the industrial revolution to promote a smart province to improve efficiency and access to services. – 701787
