Shivambu, Steenhuizen face DC

SPEAKER of Parliament Baleka Mbete has cited two prominent MPs, respectively the chief whip of the DA and that of the EFF.

Mbete has referred an alleged breach of privilege by DA chief whip John Steenhuisen to the powers and privileges committee to probe the matter and present a report.

Steenhuisen allegedly breached parliamentary on March 9 “during Questions to the deputy president regarding a failure to inform Parliament about the deployment of the SANDF last year in accordance with the Constitution and the Defence Act (No 42 of 2002)”.

Mbete had also sent to the disciplinary committee for investigation and a report on “the conduct of NF Shivambu MP in the National Assembly on Thursday, November 10, 2016, following his failure to withdraw an unparliamentary remark”.

On that day, during a failed no confidence debate in President Jacob Zuma, Shivambu warned ANC MPs that the president would “kill them” if they stood against him as political opponents.

He refused to withdraw the remark when asked to do so.

“Before you know it, he would have captured everything,” he told MPs on ANC benches. “After he has dealt with everyone else, he is going to arrest you. He is going to arrest all of you, he is going to lock you up, he is going to kill you. He has nothing to lose now.”

Parliament announced the action to be taken against Steenhuisen and Shivambu in its announcements, tablings and committee reports document released yesterday.
