POLICE have welcomed the 30 year sentence given to a 32-year-old Botshabelo man, Motloung, who raped a 16-yearold girl.

Police said the sentence sent a clear message to wouldbe offenders that such acts would not be tolerated.

“We will always ensure that perpetrators of crime are dealt with and are removed from society to protect vulnerable young women and teenagers,” commissioner Lt-Gen Lebeoana Tsumane said.

About Motloung police spokesperson Sgt Martin Xuma said he raped the teenager in January when she went with a female friend to watch initiates who were coming back from the mountains.

Xuma said on the way, they met up with Motloung, who at that time was unknown to the victim. He then asked to speak to her and requested her contact details.

“She gave him her number and continued to watch the initiation ceremony. After a while they went to another street where there was another ceremony. They then met Motloung again standing outside the shop.

He called the victim to accompany him to his place, when the victim refused, he took out a knife and dragged her to his home which was not far from the tuck shop,” Xuma said.

He said upon their arrival he went inside the bedroom leaving her standing in the kitchen and later called her to the bedroom and forced her to undress.

“When the victim refused he threatened to hack her with a panga.

“He then raped her for the entire night. In the morning when the victim’s mother came to enquire about her daughter’s whereabouts, he denied seeing her,” Xuma said.

He said Motloung later confessed to spending the night with the victim and said she left early in the morning to go to her relative’s house.

“The perpetrators’ mother found the victim hiding behind a cabinet upon opening her son’s bedroom door.

“She then told the perpetrators’ mother that her son had raped her and was holding her hostage. The mother helped her to go to the police station,” Xuma said.

Last Thursday, a 45-year-old man who killed his 32-year-old girlfriend was sentenced to eight years in prison.

The murder occurred in 2005.
