Sus­pects part of syndicate?

AS THE fes­tive sea­son ap­proaches more rob­beries are likely to oc­cur, fol­low­ing the ap­pear­ance of two sus­pects in the Eden­burg Mag­is­trate’s Court on charges of at­tempted mur­der and rob­bery.

Their case was post­poned to Mon­day for a for­mal bail ap­pli­ca­tion.

Their ap­pear­ance fol­lows that of five oth­ers who were ar­rested in Septem­ber and are be­lieved to be part of the same crime syndicate.

They al­legedly robbed a tuck shop in Eden­burg and shot at the ve­hi­cle of the owner of the shop.

Po­lice spokesper­son Const Peter Kareli said the sus­pects were charged with storm­ing the tuck shop, robbed the vic­tims of an undis­closed amount of cash and flee­ing the crime scene.

Fol­low­ing the rob­beries, Free State pro­vin­cial com­mis­sioner Lt Gen Le­beoana Tsumane sum­moned a task team af­ter Tromps­burg po­lice ex­pe­ri­enced a num­ber of armed rob­beries in the area.

Kareli said three un­li­censed firearms were con­fis­cated when five sus­pects were ar­rested last month.

“Our in­ves­ti­ga­tors are try­ing to find a link as to whether the two lat­est sus­pects were also in­volved in the rob­beries that were com­mit­ted in the Tromps­burg clus­ter,” Kareli said.

All the sus­pects are aged be­tween 25 and 30.

Cases of at­tempted mur­der and rob­bery were reg­is­tered af­ter the two sus­pects were ar­rested on Satur­day.

Mean­while, three males aged 34, 35 and 36, are ex­pected to ap­pear in the Beth­le­hem Mag­is­trate’s Court soon on charges of busi­ness rob­bery and il­le­gal pos­ses­sion of firearms and am­mu­ni­tion.

Three men were ar­rested last Fri­day shortly af­ter al­legedly rob­bing a shop in Ex­ten­sion 1 in Bohlokong, Beth­le­hem.

Po­lice spokesper­son Capt Zweli Mo­ho­beleli said the sus­pects are charged with storm­ing the shop and threat­en­ing the 26­year old owner with a firearm be­fore flee­ing with cell­phones, cash and car­tons of cig­a­rettes.

He said a de­tailed de­scrip­tion of the sus­pects was pro­vided to mem­bers of the Beth­le­hem K9 unit. In about an hour, the sus­pects had been lo­cated at a tav­ern where they were con­fronted. Cell­phones be­long­ing to the vic­tim, cash, cig­a­rettes and a firearm re­port­edly used dur­ing the rob­bery were re­cov­ered.
