Suspects part of syndicate?
AS THE festive season approaches more robberies are likely to occur, following the appearance of two suspects in the Edenburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder and robbery.
Their case was postponed to Monday for a formal bail application.
Their appearance follows that of five others who were arrested in September and are believed to be part of the same crime syndicate.
They allegedly robbed a tuck shop in Edenburg and shot at the vehicle of the owner of the shop.
Police spokesperson Const Peter Kareli said the suspects were charged with storming the tuck shop, robbed the victims of an undisclosed amount of cash and fleeing the crime scene.
Following the robberies, Free State provincial commissioner Lt Gen Lebeoana Tsumane summoned a task team after Trompsburg police experienced a number of armed robberies in the area.
Kareli said three unlicensed firearms were confiscated when five suspects were arrested last month.
“Our investigators are trying to find a link as to whether the two latest suspects were also involved in the robberies that were committed in the Trompsburg cluster,” Kareli said.
All the suspects are aged between 25 and 30.
Cases of attempted murder and robbery were registered after the two suspects were arrested on Saturday.
Meanwhile, three males aged 34, 35 and 36, are expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of business robbery and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Three men were arrested last Friday shortly after allegedly robbing a shop in Extension 1 in Bohlokong, Bethlehem.
Police spokesperson Capt Zweli Mohobeleli said the suspects are charged with storming the shop and threatening the 26year old owner with a firearm before fleeing with cellphones, cash and cartons of cigarettes.
He said a detailed description of the suspects was provided to members of the Bethlehem K9 unit. In about an hour, the suspects had been located at a tavern where they were confronted. Cellphones belonging to the victim, cash, cigarettes and a firearm reportedly used during the robbery were recovered.
