Fire victims rebuild shacks
VICTIMS of a fire that destroyed their homes in the Kennedy Road informal settlement this week have begun rebuilding their shacks.
Around 80 families were left destitute by the inferno that tore through the shack land in the early hours of Tuesday.
Some of the residents who had been away on holiday at the time of the incident, returned to find themselves homeless after being made aware of the disaster by friends and neighbours.
Shack dweller Nomthandazo Biyela said the fire appeared to have been caused by an unattended candle.
“People get drunk at Christmas and leave things unattended. We are lucky that this time nobody was injured in the blase. This happens too often around this time of the year,” Biyela said.
The eThekwini municipality says it is investigating the cause of the fire.
Municipal spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa said disaster management unit officials had been dispatched to the informal settlement to conduct a proper assessment with the hope that most of the owners would have returned from holiday.
