Probe launched after officer shot attacker
TWO separate investigations have been launched after a metro police officer shot dead a man who stabbed him at the Mfuleni police station at the weekend.
The official was registering a docket on Sunday when he was approached by the man who asked that he be taken into custody. It is alleged he then produced a knife and stabbed the officer three times.
The officer then retaliated, fatally shooting his attacker. Two other people were also wounded. The incident reportedly happened about 11.30am as a metro police officer was registering a case docket at the police station.
The mayoral committee member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith, said while the officer was doing this, a member of the public arrived.
“The man appeared agitated and indicated that he wanted to be arrested. He turned to speak to the metro police officer before taking out a knife and stabbing the officer twice in the chest and once in his left arm.
“The officer retaliated by discharging three rounds from his service pistol, fatally wounding the suspect. Two other civilians sustained wounds, both to the right foot, as a result of ricocheting bullets,” Smith said. The metro police officer was treated at Bellville Melomed Hospital and the city confirmed that he would receive counselling as part of the city’s employee assistance programme.
One of the two civilians wounded was transported to Tygerberg Hospital for treatment.
Smith said apart from the police investigation, the Independent Investigative Police Directorate must also investigate the incident.
