Khoza provides NFD draw

WHEN PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza called a media briefing yesterday, the expectation was that he would put to bed the issue between Ajax Cape Town and Tendai Ndoro, but that didn’t occur.

Khoza said the PSL was also deliberating on the CEO position that last saw Brand de Villiers as the permanent person in that seat in November

But what was announced at OR Tambo’s Southern Sun Hotel was the First National Division promotional playoffs draw, even though the two teams from the NFD has not been confirmed and the AjaxNdoro issue still unresolved.

That means there is no clarity as to whether it will be Ajax Cape Town in the playoffs or Platinum Stars and in the NFD, teams such as Black Leopards, Jomo Cosmos, Witbank Spurs and Real Kings may still finish second and third respectively.

At the same time, that also means Orlando Pirates could find themselves in for some free points should the verdict go against Ajax, meaning Pirates will receive three points and three goals.

Platinum Stars too, at the bottom of the log, will be watching, as Ajax losing four points will see Dikwena trail the Urban Warriors by three points with three matches left for both sides until the end of the season.

In conducting the NFD playoffs/relegation draw in front of the National Soccer League (NSL) board of governors yesterday, Khoza said he wanted to show transparency and avoid unnecessary issues.

Khoza also spoke about the Ajax matter, saying the PSL’s hope was that the issue would be sorted out by the time the playoffs begin.

“We are hopeful that we will avoid that eventuality because we don’t know who’s going to be No 15. It might not be Ajax Cape Town, so we can’t even talk about it. That’s a matter that is sub judice, we can’t talk about any detail or issues about it,” Khoza said.

“We just have to keep quiet about it because the matter is under consideration at the moment. I still have to report to the board of governors on where it is at this point in time. But even then, we can’t say that there’s no guarantee that Ajax Cape Town will be number 15 (at the end of the season).”

To help the draw be as smooth as possible, the NSL named the clubs that would be in the playoffs as NFD 2 and NFD 3, with the PSL named PSL 15 for the purpose of the draw.

That means whoever finished second in the PSL will NFD 3 in the playoffs, the third placed finish will be NFD 1 and the PSL club that will make the playoffs will be NFD 2.

In the NFD, Leopards are second on 44 points, with Cosmos third on 43, Spurs fourth on 42 and Kings fifth on 41, giving all the clubs a chance to make it as they all are left with three matches each to play.
