Three die in fiery crash
POLICE are working on identifying three people who perished in an inferno caused by a crash involving three trucks on the N3 near Estcourt yesterday.
The accident, which also left three others fighting for their lives occurred about 5am at the Loskop flyover, forcing the closure of the road for more than five hours.
Emergency services worked hard to get the blaze under control and clean up the accident scene.
EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said after the fire had been extinguished the burnt out trucks were searched for the occupants reported missing by the surviving victims.
“It is believed that some occupants of the trucks have been burnt beyond recognition,” McKenzie said.
By yesterday afternoon traffic had backed up to as far as the Midway Ultra City while the forensic investigation team was trying to establish the exact number of people who had lost their lives in the crash.
“The exact cause of the crash is not known at this stage,” McKenzie said.
By 4pm traffic had once again started going past the accident scene after vehicles travelling towards Durban were diverted through the CBD and back on to the N3 at Midway.
