Three die in fiery crash

PO­LICE are work­ing on iden­ti­fy­ing three peo­ple who per­ished in an in­ferno caused by a crash in­volv­ing three trucks on the N3 near Est­court yes­ter­day.

The ac­ci­dent, which also left three oth­ers fight­ing for their lives oc­curred about 5am at the Loskop fly­over, forc­ing the clo­sure of the road for more than five hours.

Emer­gency ser­vices worked hard to get the blaze un­der con­trol and clean up the ac­ci­dent scene.

EMS spokesper­son Robert McKen­zie said af­ter the fire had been ex­tin­guished the burnt out trucks were searched for the oc­cu­pants re­ported miss­ing by the sur­viv­ing vic­tims.

“It is be­lieved that some oc­cu­pants of the trucks have been burnt be­yond recog­ni­tion,” McKen­zie said.

By yes­ter­day af­ter­noon traf­fic had backed up to as far as the Mid­way Ul­tra City while the foren­sic in­ves­ti­ga­tion team was try­ing to es­tab­lish the ex­act num­ber of peo­ple who had lost their lives in the crash.

“The ex­act cause of the crash is not known at this stage,” McKen­zie said.

By 4pm traf­fic had once again started go­ing past the ac­ci­dent scene af­ter ve­hi­cles trav­el­ling to­wards Dur­ban were di­verted through the CBD and back on to the N3 at Mid­way.
