Mthembu defends Mkhwebane
ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu yesterday said that the party in Parliament would shoot down a DA-inspired plot to “collapse” the office of the public protector under the leadership of Busisiwe Mkhwebane and her deputy, Kevin Malunga.
Mthembu said, without a shadow or form of trial, Mkhwebane and her deputy had become victims of the DA’s malicious intention to destabilise the Chapter nine institution.
He said the fact that Mkhwebane’s CIEX report was set aside in court, did not warrant her removal from office as such matters were part of the course for anyone in her position.
“Do they then mean that whenever recommendations from the public pro- tector get taken on review, that means that they are not fit to hold office? That’s utter rubbish,” Mthembu said.
Hos comments came in the wake of the DA initiating a bid for Mkhwebane’s removal through an inquiry into her fitness to hold office.
A decision was taken by the portfolio committee on justice and correctional services to proceed with the probe.
It is for this reason that Mthembu said under no circumstance would Mkhwebane be removed from the helm of the Chapter nine institution.
“There is no inquiry that will come before Parliament. We can ventilate on the matter but that’s where it ends, full stop.
“There is absolutely no justification from wanting to remove the public protector from office.
“At no stage has any committee of Parliament found her incompetent or guilty of any misconduct. The DA has never liked Busisiwe, never. They hate her with a passion.”
Mthembu said perceptions that Mkhwebane was a “Zuma spy” were unwarranted.
“They said she’s a plant for Zuma but she has proven herself not to be a plant for anybody.”
Mthembu also closed ranks behind Malunga, who is alleged to have interfered in an ongoing investigation at the Ekurhuleni municipality.
“The allegations don’t warrant an inquiry, they are flawed.
“No self-respecting committee in Parliament will deal with that matter,” he said.
