Fresh, Marawa and Booth down for #NoExcuse campaign
RADIO personalities Robert Marawa and DJ Fresh as well as former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth have joined the anti-domestic abuse campaign #NoExcuse launched by Minister of Women in the Presidency Susan Shabangu.
The announcement was made at the #NoExcuse launch event at the South African Breweries (SAB) headquarters in Bryanston on Monday.
The #NoExcuse movement is a longterm, five-year initiative headed up by a consortium of non-governmental and civic organisations that focus on driving positive change among South African men.
DJ Fresh, who hosts the Fresh Breakfast on Metro FM, said he joined the movement because he wants to set an example to his children.
Fresh said he used to quarrel with his wife a lot and was bothered that their fights were witnessed by his son.
“We fought a lot, sometimes about nothing. Our fights would degenerate to almost verbal abuse, until our son who was three at the time witnessed all of it and it bothered me that he was seeing that, now I have learned to not let anger overcome me, instead I walk away,” he said.
Marawa said this campaign would be the voice for the voiceless victims who often hide behind make-up and other things to conceal their bruises and scars.
“In my line of work, I have witnessed colleagues hide their bruises with makeup.
“It bothered me that I couldn’t help them, so when this opportunity presented itself it only made sense that I use my voice in fighting gender based violence,” he said.
Shabangu said the company responsible for the manufacturing of alcohol has a great responsibility ahead.
“SAB has a big responsibility ahead because people use its brand as an excuse to be violent. We welcome the initiative to drive positive change in the country,” she said.
On November 19, the #NoExcuse movement will take to the streets of Cape Town as it embarks on a demonstrative march to the South African Parliament, under the clarion call of ending gender-based violence.
