A COMMUNITY activist from the farming town of Senekal has been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment after defrauding a widow of R45 000.

Nyakane Monkoe of Matwabeng on the outskirts of Senekal was sentenced on Friday in the Ladybrand Magistrate’s Court after being found guilty of fraud.

He was sentenced together with the Setsoto local municipality official Francis Mapane.

Monkoe was sentenced to 11 years while Mapane received an eight year sentence for scamming the victim.

In July 2016, the duo went to Marquard after they heard about a woman who had saved a lot of money in her house. They arrived at her house pretending to be police officers and told the woman to give them R45 000 or she would be arrested.

The following day the woman realised that they were not police officers and opened a case against them.

She reported the matter and informed the Marquard police that she had been defrauded by two men who pretended to be police officers.

After an investigation by the police the two were arrested and granted bail of R3000 each for the duration of the trial.

Monkoe was known for his efforts to fight crime and gang violence in his community. He also organised the annual December ceremony to award people who made a tremendous impact in the area of Senekal.

“Indeed we are shocked and disappointed about the actions of Monkoe. He was a role model to our children regarding the splendid duties he performed in the community. I wonder why he committed such a criminal activity,” resident Seipati Setloane said.
