THE police in Kakamas and Hartswater have called on community members to be extra careful in canals.

This after several drownings occurred in those areas.

The comments came after a nineyear-old boy and a man in his mid-40s drowned in canals in Kakamas and Hartswater.

A two-day combing of the canals came up with the body of the nine-yearold boy from Bonita Park.

Capt Sergio Kock said the police in Hartswater had opened an inquest case into the death of the boy.

“It is believed that the boy and some friends went to cool themselves off in the water of the canal on Saturday when the child disappeared under the water.

“Police divers had been searching for the boy ever since. The investigation continues,” he said.

MEC for transport, safety and liaison Pauline Williams has called on child safety to be prioritised, especially as the festive season is on the horizon when young ones will be on their school holidays.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Capt Francois Steenkamp of Kakamas police said a person believed to be a seasonal farm worker was found dead in the canal.

“The possibility exists that the person might have been in the canal for almost a week. There is also a possibility that the person is a seasonal worker from somewhere else, Steenkamp said.

“He was dressed in a blue T-shirt, blue denim trousers and was wearing black and white takkies,” he said.

Steenkamp said police were calling on members of the community who might have a missing relative to come forward.

He said anyone who can assist police in tracing the next of kin or who may know the identity of the deceased is requested to contact WO Frikkie van Wyk of Kakamas detective services on 054 431 0863 or cell 084 833 8590.
