PUPILS from Ithabiseng Secondary School in Senekal have pledged to work hard and stop the escalating violence and gangsterism on school premises.

The pledge was signed at the EE Monese Community Hall this week.

About 450 pupils signed the pledge, indicating their commitment to working hard and stopping violence, bullying and drug use.

The oath was led by community development worker Nyakane Monkoe from Premier Ace Magashule’s office.

The pupils gathered under the theme, Enough is Enough With Violence and Gangsterism.

“Today is about us saying no to bullying, violence, drug use, gangsterism and trying to stop it from happening at not just our school and in our community but at every school.

“It is important to stop it so people stop getting hurt,” pupil Tsoane Mokoena said.

“I think peer pressure has a negative connotation but it can be a positive thing if it goes towards a positive outcome. This pledge indicates that my life is totally changed.”

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said gangsterism had a severe negative impact on the education system and schools needed to use all the tools at their disposal to address it.

Monkoe said he had organised a big soccer tournament for next Wednesday where the pupils would participate as they pledged to end violence.

He said the trophies and medals were well prepared for next week’s soccer tournament.

Teacher Oupa Makhathini, who also signed the pledge, said if pupils saw one another signing the pledge, it would encourage them to do the same.

“School is supposed to be a safe haven where young people can go to learn the basics of mathematics, literature, science and other subjects, without fearing for their safety, feeling intimidated or being harassed,” Monkoe said.
