The faults that hurt our society

The New Age (Northern Cape) - - COMMENT -

STATS SA recently revealed that there are more than half a million children being used as child labour. Forcing children into labour is truly an horrific crime, it is cruel and inhuman and a special task force of police and social workers should be assembled to stamp out this evil.

Stats SA also had some worrying things to say about mortality, where malnutrition is still killing many children and is third on the list of causes of death among one to 14 year olds.

How can this happen? Nobody should go hungry in this country.

The report is a wake-up call in many respects, including the growth of noncommunicable diseases that accounted for 57.4% of all deaths, which means that we need to address unhealthy lifestyles through public education.

Fortunately, we have organisations like Stats SA to gather information and present it to the public, but we are the ones who must heed these findings and ensure that we act on addressing them.
