It’s a record breaking month, good and bad, as drought begins to bite

Maize hits record high

In a development that looks set to batter a local economy already reeling under low growth, a falling Rand, rising interest rates and a severe drought, the price of yellow maize has reached a record high in South Africa.

For March delivery, yellow maize rose 1.3% to touch R3,325 a ton. This price is the highest since trading started on the SA Futures Exchange almost 20 years ago. The country is set to import around 900,000 tons of maize next year, the first time in seven years, according to a NAMC website report.¡

Astral posts record results

An increase in poultry and feed volumes as well as improved poultry selling prices resulted in Astral posting record annual financial results, according to the group’s CEO, Chris Schutte.

Astral’s operating profit for the year ended 30 September 2015 was up by 123,3% to R1,1-billion, with the poultry division reporting a 25,5% increase in revenue to R8,74billion, due to a 12,8% increase in broiler volumes and an almost 12% rise in the average selling price of poultry during the year.

However, Schutte warned that cheap EU imports, and likely from the USA too, coupled with a weak economy and severe drought all pose a threat to the future growth and sustainability of South Africa’s poultry industry.
