‘N VOLMAAKTE STORM

Poultry industry “Patriotic” in AGOA renewal

The Poultry Bulletin - - FRONT PAGE -

The out of cycle review of the AGOA has reached a successful conclusion, with negotiators agreeing on the finer details of the outstanding issues relating to Phytosanitary and disease protocols. This will ensure the country’s continued participation in the multi-billion Rand trade deal. However, South Africa’s continued duty-free access for agricultural products is conditional on the country demonstrating that it is implementing the agreement relating to imports of poultry, pork and beef.

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies singled out SAPA and the local poultry industry for praise, saying that even though the industry had nothing to gain from the AGOA renewal specifically, they had agreed to 65,000 tons of US poultry imports free of anti-dumping duties in the national interest.

“We are expecting that South Africa will participate in AGOA for free trade flows without any problem,” said Davies, adding that shipments of poultry as well as beef and pork would be closely monitored at the port of entry to ensure that meat imports are free of contamination.

The first imports of US poultry under the agreement are expected to arrive in South Africa well before the 15 March 2016 deadline.¡
