Poultry in trouble, conman scams, and flies for food

Arend Kuipers 30 Maart 1946 - 18 Julie 2016

God se Liefde is groot. Rus sag Arend Kuipers.¡

Agri Securitas help boere misdaad voorkom

Poultry farm investments pie in the sky

Several people have lost their hard-earned cash by falling victim to a Pretoria-based outfit that recently left their offices without leaving a forwarding address.

As reported in the Sowetan, the company used online and billboard advertising to lure unsuspecting people by promising lucrative returns from poultry farming. One ‘investor’ reportedly lost R250,000 with a further→

two losing R50,000 each. Consumers who are interested in investing in poultry operations are advised to contact the Department of Agriculture or SAPA first to check on the legitimacy of operations like this before parting with their money.¡

Poultry prospects worse than anticipated

Prospects contained in the interim results for the six months to end March 2016 - published on 16 May 2016 - alerted Astral shareholders to the negative impact that high feed costs, poultry imports and the weak consumer market would have on the results of the group.

During the third quarter ended 30 June 2016, the abovementioned factors have had a detrimental effect on the results of the group, with the impact more severe than originally anticipated.

Feed costs have continued to escalate following the impact that the drought had on the local maize crop. This is expected to continue into 2017 until projections of a better maize crop for the new 2016/2017 planting season materialise.

During this period there were also record levels of poultry imports, which added to the existing surplus of poultry stock in the country. This, together with a consumer market that is under pressure, resulted in downward pressure on selling prices in order to sell the on-going production of chicken.

These trading conditions resulted in a number of midto large-sized independent poultry producers having

severe financial distress and are either currently in the process of closing down their businesses, or are going into business rescue.

“As a result of the on-going uncertainty pertaining to these key factors, Astral cannot give guidance of the impact on the results for the year at this point in time, but felt that the market should be made aware of the general trading conditions in which the group is operating,” said Chris Schutte, Astral CEO.¡

The flies have it

Fly maggots can be used to reduce organic wastes that are a source of pollution and costly to manage, while simultaneously producing a cheap and sustainable source of protein.

Nina Parry, a Masters student in the Department of Zoology and Entomology at the University of Pretoria, is investigating the use of fly maggots to reduce organic waste and to process these maggots into a protein that can be fed to livestock and farmed fish. This will reduce reliance on expensive and unsustainable protein products such as soybean meal and fishmeal, while simultaneously reducing problematic organic waste products.

Parry is currently running experiments with several fly species that occur naturally in Gauteng to determine how well they reduce swine manure, abattoir waste or kitchen waste. Thereafter, the maggots will be processed to determine their nutritional value for use as a feed source for animals.

When the maggots stop feeding they can be collected, sterilised and dried out to produce a type of protein feed suitable for chickens and their animals. The leftover waste is less pungent, produces fewer CO2 and methane emissions due to a reduction in the presence and activity of bacteria, and can be turned into a rich form of fertiliser.¡
