An in­dus­try in cri­sis

The South African poul­try in­dus­try is in a state of cri­sis. Fol­low­ing As­tral CEO Chris Schutte’s re­cent warn­ings about the im­pact of for­eign im­ports on lo­cal pro­duc­ers, RCL Foods chief ex­ec­u­tive Miles Dally says a mas­sive over­sup­ply sit­u­a­tion is the re­sult of “sur­plus do­mes­tic vol­umes as well as record lev­els of dumped im­ports.”

Added to this, the an­nual quota of 65,000 tons of US bone-in por­tions al­lowed free of anti-dump­ing duty is set to worsen this sit­u­a­tion, which Dally says is an­other source of sup­ply in an ex­tremely over­sup­plied mar­ket.

“Most coun­tries in Africa have banned chicken im­ports to pro­tect their own in­dus­tries while other coun­tries around the world use non-trade phy­tosan­i­tary bar­ri­ers to achieve the same end,” he says.

SAPA CEO Kevin Lovell says

losses by lo­cal pro­duc­ers are likely to add to the 1,000 jobs al­ready lost, with as many as 5,000 set to go by the end of the year.

“This is not what the coun­try needs right now,” he said.¡
