INDUSTRY IN CRISIS
An industry in crisis
The South African poultry industry is in a state of crisis. Following Astral CEO Chris Schutte’s recent warnings about the impact of foreign imports on local producers, RCL Foods chief executive Miles Dally says a massive oversupply situation is the result of “surplus domestic volumes as well as record levels of dumped imports.”
Added to this, the annual quota of 65,000 tons of US bone-in portions allowed free of anti-dumping duty is set to worsen this situation, which Dally says is another source of supply in an extremely oversupplied market.
“Most countries in Africa have banned chicken imports to protect their own industries while other countries around the world use non-trade phytosanitary barriers to achieve the same end,” he says.
SAPA CEO Kevin Lovell says
losses by local producers are likely to add to the 1,000 jobs already lost, with as many as 5,000 set to go by the end of the year.
“This is not what the country needs right now,” he said.¡
