Editors NOTE

The Poultry Bulletin - - EDITORS NOTE - By Cameron Mackenzie

Galliova’s come and gone, and once again, local food writers were delighted with this annual event that recognises all the work they do. You can share the excitement of the day by flipping to our Out and About pages.

On the subject of eggs and healthy eating, our International News section carries a story on one of the oldest people in the world who lives on just two eggs a day. If ever there was proof that eggs are good for you, here it is. That said, don’t take our word for it. Our Nutrition News update features research findings that show eggs are great for helping combat cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Given the baking heat wave we’ve been suffering over the last few weeks, of special interest to our smallholder or backyard producers is a piece on hot weather and its effect on egg production. Take a little time out to read this and you could save a bundle in the long run.

South Africa is one of the world’s most unprotected agricultural markets - and there is certainly a shortage of subsidies or grants to assist our farmers and boost their production and markets. In stark contrast, the EU is spending R1,5 billion to boost theirs. Will our government take note, especially when our producers are being asked to compete with international ones on a supposed level playing field!

If you read nothing else, take a look at Dr Charlotte Nkuna’s Organisation Matters column. There is some critical information on the government’s planned interventions aimed at boosting the concept of an inclusive economy in the agricultural sector. As Kevin has alluded to in his columns before, it is a national imperative to create an economy where all South Africans participate and are free to do so.

Lastly, we’d like to echo SAPA’S congratulations to Broiler Organisation Committee member Mabel Mothlale of Warrenton Super Chicken in the Northern Cape who won DAFF’S ‘Top Entrepreneur Processing’ award. All power to our producers!¡
