he deadly H5N8 strain of bird flu has been detected in countries across Europe as governments take measures to try halt this virulent disease from spreading further.
To date, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, Hungary and Croatia have all reported outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N8, potentially spelling disaster for national flocks.
The negative effects
of H5N8 outbreaks are not only confined to domestic consumption losses, but extend to exports too, where no poultry may be exported for three months after the last case of avian influenza has been detected. The losses associated with this disease run into millions of Euros.¡
