B Tird flu threat­ens EU ex­port ini­tia­tives

Bird flu hits Europe

he deadly H5N8 strain of bird flu has been de­tected in coun­tries across Europe as govern­ments take mea­sures to try halt this vir­u­lent dis­ease from spread­ing fur­ther.

To date, the Nether­lands, Den­mark, Ger­many, Aus­tria, Poland, Switzer­land, Hun­gary and Croa­tia have all re­ported out­breaks of highly path­o­genic H5N8, po­ten­tially spell­ing disas­ter for na­tional flocks.

The neg­a­tive ef­fects

of H5N8 out­breaks are not only con­fined to do­mes­tic con­sump­tion losses, but ex­tend to ex­ports too, where no poul­try may be ex­ported for three months af­ter the last case of avian in­fluenza has been de­tected. The losses as­so­ci­ated with this dis­ease run into mil­lions of Eu­ros.¡
