The first case of H5N6 has been de­tected in Tai­wan, with health au­thor­i­ties in the east­ern part of the coun­try im­pos­ing dis­ease con­tain­ment mea­sures. These in­clude en­hanced in­spec­tion and mon­i­tor­ing of fa­cil­i­ties within 3 kilo­me­tres of where a dead gosling was found, as well as pro­tec­tive nets to pre­vent con­tact with mi­gra­tory birds.

Tu Wen-jane, di­rec­tor gen­eral of Tai­wan’s An­i­mal Health Re­search In­sti­tute, says the DNA se­quence was 99% like the virus de­tected in South Korea and Ja­pan, where 340 and 10 farms re­spec­tively were in­fected with the dis­ease.¡
