Top award for SA Aca­demic

SAPA’S Poul­try Re­search Chair at the Univer­sity of Pre­to­ria, As­so­ciate Pro­fes­sor Celia Abol­nik, was named as the lau­re­ate of the South Africa re­gion of the 2016 Kwame Nkrumah Re­gional Awards for women for her re­search in avian res­pi­ra­tory viruses, es­pe­cially those that ef­fect chicken and os­trich pro­duc­tion in Africa.

Other re­cip­i­ents in­cluded Pro­fes­sor Jane Ngila from Kenya as the East Africa Re­gion lau­re­ate; Dr Lamia Chaari Fourati from Tu­nisia; Pro­fes­sor Rokia Sanogo from Mali; and Pro­fes­sor Olu-owolabi Bamidele from Nige­ria.

Pro­fes­sor Abol­nik’s award, which aims to pro­mote the par­tic­i­pa­tion of African women in sci­ence, tech­nol­ogy and in­no­va­tion, was pre­sented by Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-zuma, out­go­ing Chair­per­son of the AU.
