Trav­el­ers urged to watch out

The World Health Or­gan­i­sa­tion has called on all coun­tries to mon­i­tor closely out­breaks of deadly avian in­fluenza in birds and poul­try, and to re­port promptly any hu­man cases that could sig­nal the start of a flu pan­demic.

South Africans trav­el­ling to the north­ern hemi­sphere have been warned to be alert to the health threat posed by out­breaks of bird flu, es­pe­cially the vir­u­lent H7N9 strain de­tected in China where more than 120 peo­ple have been in­fected and as many as 40 have died.
