Because Gram negative bacteria possess an extra outer protective layer, consisting mainly of lipopolysaccharides makes it is very hard for the antimicrobial substances to have a direct antimicrobial action. Being able to damage this hydrophilic extra membrane of the Gram negative bacteria makes the antimicrobial substances more efficient in combating these bacteria. Permeabilizers have this ability to facilitate the entry of the antimicrobial substances in the cytoplasm of the Gram negative bacteria, were this substances can deliver they’re direct antimicrobial action on the bacteria.
