Woman, 63, dies in Nomzamo shack fire
A 63-YEAR-old Nomzamo informal settlement woman burnt to death in her shack on Tuesday night.
Victoria Hlangwini is believed to have died in her bed.
Hlangwini’s neighbours, who wanted to remain anonymous, said they heard Hlangwini crying out but they were unable to reach her.
Her daughter, Noxolo Qaba, said her mother was not well and could not walk.
“I made a fire for her and gave her something to eat and as I was leaving I put out the fire and left her in bed. At about 9pm I was woken up by people saying that my mother was in trouble.”
Ward committee member Buzani Gcinisa said this would have not happened if Hlangwini was on the list of housing beneficiaries.
“The woman was 63-years-old and did not get an old age grant. She did not have a house, while young people and families of the few people who are in power all have RDP houses,” he said.
Gcinisa said there were more old people like Hlangwini who deserved to be on the list.
“I ask Lukhanji executive mayor Nozi Makanda to speed up the process and investigate the issue of houses in Nomzamo,” he said.
Police spokesman warrant officer Namhla Mdleleni said she was in a meeting. No response had been received at the time of going to press.
Lukhanji has instructed a housing commission to look into complaints.
