QUEENSTOWN Boys Boxing Club (QBBC) coach Mabhuti Mapeyi has been selected as the head coach of the Eastern Cape boxing team which will compete at the national championships in Grahamstown from July 7 to 12.

Mapeyi, who is also the Chris Hani Amateur Boxing Organisation secretary, was selected at the provincial boxing trials in East London over the weekend.

He is the first person from the district to be selected as head coach of the provincial team. Manzozuko Mofu, who is also from Chris Hani district, was selected as the team manager.

Mapeyi said his se- lection showed that the district’s boxers had performed well in the provincial trials. “We are slowly reclaiming our place in boxing.”

Many champions had been produced at local level in the past.

“We have a rich history in boxing and the only thing that can make us go forward is to motivate more young people to take up the sport.”

Training sessions will take place in Port Elizabeth from June 29 to July 6.

“I want to congratulate the boxers who brought home medals from the provincial trials over the weekend,” he said. Aphelele Ntila was awarded a gold medal, Siphesihle Majara a silver, Jose Odendaal a silver and Aphiwe Mangena a bronze medal.
