Sick man in need of help

The Rep - - NEWS - By Tembile Sgqolana

JACKSON Banana Klaas, 49, spends most of his time in bed after recently being admitted to hospital for pneumonia.

He lives in an RDP house without electricity and struggles to make ends meet.

He used to work as a contractor in Queenstown but was involved in a car accident in 1991 with the resultant injuries preventing him from working.

“I went back to work but I did not last a single day because of the pain, now I depend on garden jobs in order to get something to eat,” he said.

When The Rep visited his house on Monday, Klaas had finished cooking a meal on a fire outside his house and was preparing to light a wick in a Lucky Star tin which he uses as a light in his home. The house contains an old refrigerator, an old cupboard and a bed. He uses clothing to close the broken window.

Klaas said recently there were people who received food parcels from the department of social development but he was not on the list.

“I have never had electricity and I think that contributed to my poor health as I spent five days in hospital recently. I would love to get a job but not a job that will make me carry heavy things as I have a painful leg.”

Anyone able to assist can contact Tembile Sgqolana on (045) 839-4040.
