Workshop gutted by fire

A WORKSHOP of the Siyanqoba fuel station in Ezibeleni was gutted on Tuesday morning.

Petrol attendant Xolisa Kala said he was informed that the workshop was on fire at about 5am.

A security company rushed to the scene, but Kala said smoke was billowing from the workshop, which was locked. The door was kicked in but no-one was able to enter the premises.

Buckets filled with water and a hose pipe were used to extinguish the blaze with the fire brigade arriving about an hour later.

Fellow petrol attendant Eric Maselane said he was scared that the fire – and subsequent damage to the petrol station – may lead to people losing their jobs. Motorist Malibongwe Fololo said as the petrol station was the only one in the area, it was hoped it would soon be fully functional.

Station owner Mohammed Mayat said damage was estimated at millions but he could not comment further.

Police spokesman Captain Namhla Mdleleni said no case had been opened but that no foul play was suspected.
