River ‘suicide’ shock for family
SUICIDE is suspected after the body of a Mlungisi woman was found in the Komani River on Saturday morning.
The woman has been identified as Noxolo Mcwabeni, 37. Her mother, Looi Mcwabeni, said the family was in shock.
“We do not know why she did this. She did not say anything to anyone.”
She said her daughter had behaved strangely on Wednesday.
“A few days before her death, she started to have visions that there were people who wanted to kill her. We took her to a traditional healer. She was given traditional medicine but never used it and then suddenly on Saturday she just got up and ran towards the river.’’
Residents tried to stop her but, “she went into the river – and that is where she died”.
An eye witness said police arrived much later. “The residents tried to search for her, but in vain. The police called divers from East London and Port Elizabeth. They took out the body in the afternoon.”
Resident Pumelelo Canti said it was the third drowning in the river since 2015. “In 2015, an 11-year-old boy drowned while swimming with friends. Last year, a guy was being chased by community members after he snatched a bag. When he tried to cross the river, he drowned.”
Eastern Cape police spokesman lieutenant Khaya Tonjeni said police had lodged an inquest.
